At the corner of 6th and Walnut stands the Helme-Worthy Family Home, one of the first houses in Huntington Beach. Dating back to the days of “Pacific City”, construction of this house was started in Santa Ana in the late 1800s at 5th and Verano (Euclid) and later purchased by Matthew Helme, then moved to its current location around 1904 by being pulled my mules and rolled on logs. Helme established the M.E. Helme Furniture Co. in 1904, and the store he built still stands behind the home. In 1916, Helme’s daughter married Laurence Worthy and to this day, the house and store are still owned by the Helme-Worthy decendents. This house and the adjoining buildings were listed in the “National Register of Historic Places” in 1987.
